Activity tracker watches help kids develop healthy habits and keep moving in technologically fun ways. Parents already using them might want to get a kids activity tracker watch to encourage the entire family to be active together. Once I became a dad, exercise certainly became an important part of my life. I wanted to be healthy for my kids and set a good example for my daughters.

Eventually, they wanted to exercise along with me, and we started looking for the best fitness tracker for tweens and teens. We even planned vacations around destination races like the runDisney events, and the activity trackers were a great way to help us train leading up to the event. There are lots of ways fitness trackers get used while traveling, including hiking and sightseeing in a new city.

You don’t need to spend hundreds of dollars to find the best kids’ fitness tracker, either. Our list below has a range that should work for most family budgets.

1. Fitbit Ace 2

Fitbit Ace 2; Courtesy Amazon

The Fitbit Ace 2 activity tracker is aimed at kids 6 and older. It gives kids reminders to move, offers 60-minute activity challenges, as well as virtual badges and trophies. This Fitbit for kids is water-resistant to depths of up to 50 meters, making it sweat-, swim-, and splash-proof and good for the beach, pool, or cruise deck. Some kid-friendly features of the Fitbit Ace 2 include an animated clock face, colorful avatars, and cover photos that let kids personalize their profiles. Of course, this Fitbit for kids comes in bold, bright kid-colors such as grape, blue/yellow, and pink/teal.

2. Fitbit Ace 3

With the same waterproof design and badge reward system as its predecessor, the Fitbit Ace 3 steps it up with a whopping 8 days of battery life, meaning you’re all set if the kids forget to plug it in the night before the big family hiking trip. This watch also allows users to challenge parents, siblings, and friends to step competitions, gamifying the fitness fun and motivating kids to get moving. Best of all, parents can manage everyone’s Fitbit from one easy-access family account.

Having fun while stomping through the snow is a terrific way for children to stay active in the fresh cold air. But dressing properly is the key to a whine-free experience, so make sure you pick up a sturdy pair of warm boots to keep kids’ little feet cozy and dry this winter season. Look for sealed seams, thick lining, and rugged soles for footwear that will last all season and could even be handed down to younger siblings. Here are our picks for the best waterproof winter boots for kids.

Tiny mittens are adorable, aren’t they? But finding ones that fit properly and actually stay on can be a frustrating task. Isn’t it funny how something so challenging to put on—hello there, little thumb that never goes in the right place!—somehow falls off in two minutes? We all want our toddlers to get plenty of fresh air, but that’s not going to happen unless they’re sporting a pair of warm, waterproof mittens that can stand up to a kid actually playing in the cold, wet snow. You don’t need to consider duct-taping mittens on anymore. These are our picks for the best winter mittens for toddlers.

Getting the entire family out the door and to the airport is a task that warrants a vacation all its own. And oftentimes, some of the most important things are overlooked in the rush—including what you’re wearing. While comfort is key, there are several items to avoid wearing at the airport.

1. Shoes That Are Difficult to Take Off

Hiking Boots; Courtesy of TwilightSKY FOTOGRAFiE/Shutterstock.com

Multiple straps, buckles or ties on shoes will slow you down at airport security. Select slip-on styles to avoid the hassle. Vans and TOMS are great for travel days, and are available in a wide variety of solid colors and prints for both kids and adults.

2. Flip Flops or High Heels

Close up of person wearing black high heels while walking down the stairs

While flip-flops and high heels are easy to slip off and back on at airport security, they’re not a good idea. And while sandals might sound good—especially if you’re headed to the beach—airplanes are notoriously cold. Plus, who wants to walk through security barefoot? Heels are a no-no for obvious reasons.

3. Perfume

Passengers complain about headaches, asthma and allergies from others dousing themselves in their favorite scent. Save the perfume for your travel destination (or better yet, leave it at home to avoid the possibility of spills).

4. Jewelry

Woman wearing lots of jewelry

Baubles have to come off at security, so why risk losing or breaking them? Pack special pieces in a travel jewelry case and deck yourself out when you get to your destination.

5. Bobby Pins or Metal Hair Clips

Bobby Pins; Courtesy of P2K/Shutterstock.com

Don’t forget you have to go through a metal detector. Save the bobby pins and metal hair clips for later and wear a soft headband if you want to wear your hair back. Many come with bows and pompoms to please fashionistas tall and small.

6. Tight Pants

Close up of button closure and zipper on jeans

You’ll be sitting in the airport and on the plane for hours—skinny jeans just aren’t practical. But that doesn’t mean you have to sacrifice style for comfort. Check out Kut from the Kloth jeans. They’re super-soft and mold to your shape for a slimming fit. A go-to for many travelers, the brand offers colorful corduroys, boyfriend jeans, and other styles.

7. Dresses

While flowing dresses seem effortlessly chic and easy to wear, they’re not ideal for the airport—particularly when it comes time to step into the metal detector and raise your arms (and especially if the dress is on the shorter side). Instead, opt for a flowy tunic and leggings.

8. Sweaters

Regardless of whether or not it’s cold outside, the inside of a plane can get stuffy and uncomfortable—and even make you sick. Instead of a sweater, choose a cotton shirt, which is more breathable and comfortable. And if you’re concerned about getting cold, follow the golden rule of travel: always pack layers!

What’s more relaxing than a day of sand and surf? The sea breeze, the warm sun, and best of all… the unimaginable amount of family stuff that needs to be hauled along: coolers, boogie boards, umbrellas, towels, sand toys, beach chairs, diaper bags, snorkel gear—plus a kid or three. Parents who don’t want to break their backs by dragging everything through heavy sand should invest in a sturdy beach wagon.

Look for a lightweight, yet durable, high-capacity model that can hold at least 75 pounds. Ideally, be sure it’s a collapsible beach wagon that can easily slide into your vehicle’s trunk. Multiple mesh pockets are a beautiful thing for all the wet, sandy items you’ll be carting. Choose one that’s easy to maneuver, with an adjustable handle, and—we cannot stress this enough!—large, heavy-duty treaded wheels that are designed to navigate soft, deep sand. Here are our picks for the best beach wagons and carts for 2023.

1. MacSports XL Heavy Duty Collapsible Outdoor Folding Wagon

MacSports XL Heavy Duty Collapsible Outdoor Folding Wagon

Coming in at roughly 12 pounds, the MacSports XL Folding Wagon is as lightweight as it is durable. Its alloy steel frame can handle up to 300 pounds and comes with a cargo net to keep your beach gear secure. When you return home, this wagon folds down in seconds to fit in your car or shed until your next beach day.

2. Mybeachcart Foldable Beach Cart

With 12-inch balloon tires that easily glide over heavy sand, Mybeachcart’s Foldable Beach Cart makes hauling beach gear a breeze. It has a wide telescopic handle with a comfortable grip so even the tallest parent won’t have to hunch over to pull it along. Constructed of marine-grade anodized aluminum, this cart is lightweight but rugged. A 15×21-inch cargo deck with a non-slip padded platform can handle up to 165 pounds without your things sliding out onto the sand. The included oversized zippered mesh bag and two seven-inch buckle straps allow you to store everything from sand toys to sunscreen securely. And when you’re ready to go home, the cart folds flat and has a Velcro strap to keep it closed, while the wheels quickly deflate when you pull out the pin. If your family spends lots of time at the beach, this beach wagon is worth the investment.

3. Rio Brands Wonder Wheeler Deluxe

This foldable RIO Brands Wonder Wheeler Deluxe features a sturdy frame and rugged 10-inch back wheels to navigate rough terrain. Plus, it has two articulating front wheels for a smooth ride on hard ground. This beach cart can be loaded with 100 pounds of beach necessities and can be set up or broken down one-handed. You can hang up to four beach chairs on the extended top frame, and in the back, a smaller pocket can hold sunglasses, cameras, Frisbees, and snacks. There’s also a bottom tray and rack where you can slide a 48-quart cooler, a built-in insulated beverage compartment for snacks and drinks, plus a handy removable tote with a shoulder strap.

4. Moon Lence Collapsible Outdoor Utility Wagon

Measuring 36.6 x 22.4 x 23.6 inches and capable of holding up to 220 pounds, you can transport some serious beach gear in the Moon Lence Collapsible Outdoor Utility Wagon. The fabric is waterproof (always good for a day at the beach) and the telescoping handle can be adjusted to fit your height. At the end of the day, fold it up by pulling on the easy-access handle at the bottom of the wagon and store it in its convenient carrying case.

5. Rio Beach Wonder Wheeler Wide Beach Cart

Rio Beach Wonder Wheeler Wide Beach Cart

Big families hauling a ton of beach supplies will love the foldable Rio Beach Wonder Wheeler Beach Cart, which can easily accommodate up to 100 pounds of gear, and has 15 cubit-feet of storage. 6. MacSports Folding Heavy Duty All Terrain Beach Wagon

Known for its range of rugged wagons and carts, Mac Sports Folding Heavy Duty All Terrain Beach Wagon is the model we recommend if you’ll be dragging a day’s worth of gear over deep sand. Featuring easy-clean fabric that’s UV- and mildew-resistant, this model’s all-terrain wheels can carry up to 150 pounds, although in very deep sand, you’re better off not making it too heavy. It has an adjustable handle and a spacious interior that easily fits an inflatable kiddie pool, chairs, umbrellas, food and beach toys. Two cup holders set into a collapsible side table keep beverages from toppling over on your way to the water. Folding down for easy storage, this beach wagon can quickly be popped into the trunk so you can head back home before tantrums begin.

8. Big Kahuna Beach Wagon

This beach wagon—which is designed for commercial use—can accommodate up to 350 pounds of gear, making it ideal for everything your family needs at the beach. A curved, ergonomic pull handle makes it easy for your kids to drag, too. The wagon’s walls are removable if you prefer to stack the deck with large items like camping gear and extra-large coolers.

11 Best Road Trip Games for Families https://www.familyvacationcritic.com/best-road-trip-games-for-families/art/ https://www.familyvacationcritic.com/best-road-trip-games-for-families/art/#respond Tue, 31 Jan 2023 20:30:00 +0000 https://www.familyvacationcritic.com/best-road-trip-games-for-families/art/ Play these old-fashioned (and free!) games to pass the time on your next family road trip.

The post 11 Best Road Trip Games for Families appeared first on Family Vacation Critic.

]]>

Games for a family road trip need three ingredients in order to maximize their vacation mileage: portability, a minimum number of small parts, and a kid-friendly fun factor. Avoid the “Are we there yet?” blues and take a detour around the “tech trap” when you add one or more of these travel-ready games to your emergency road kit. From modern spins on retro favorites to cleverly designed all-in-one sets that kick searches for lost pieces to the curb, these are the best road trip games for families.

1. The Alphabet Game

The Alphabet Game; Courtesy Shutterstock

In this classic road trip game that doesn’t require a board or game pieces, players attempt to find words starting with every letter of the alphabet, going in order from A to Z. You can look at billboards, road signs, branded trucks, restaurant names, and more. It’s up to you whether to play cooperatively–with each player building off the group’s progress–or competitively, with everyone going through their own alphabet. Either way, when players spot their next word, they call out their letter and the word (“A! Arby’s!”) so everyone can keep track. Some people use the rule that if someone spots a graveyard, they can declare it and all other players will go back to “A”.

Another version of the Alphabet Game is for someone to pick a category (the original game is “groceries/food”, but it could be animals, places, famous people, or something else), and the family will take turns naming items from that category that begin with ascending letters from A to Z. For example, if one person starts with “aardvark,” the next person could follow up with “butterfly” and so on.

2. Melissa & Doug Flip to Win Hangman

Melissa & Doug Flip to Win Hangman; Courtesy Amazon

A retro game made road-ready, Flip to Win Hangman by Melissa & Doug is one of the best road trip games for beginning readers (ages 6 and up). Designed with flippable, magnetic wooden letters, each game comes with an erasable whiteboard and a self-store dry-erase marker. The sturdy set really holds up to repeated kid (and adult) play, which is good because it’s addictive! It’s so fun, in fact, you’ll want to buy a second game for Grandma’s house!

3. Coggy by Fat Brain Toys

Coggy by Fat Brain Toys; Courtesy Amazon

Get kids’ mental gears spinning as they build visual-spatial skills with Coggy by Fat Brain Toy Co. The mind-building travel game is designed as a single strand of connected patterned cogs, which players match to a series of corresponding pattern cards. Gears make a satisfying click as they pivot, making Coggy one of the best travel games for kids who need some sensory input when they’re cooped up in the car.

4. I Spy

I Spy game; Courtesy Amazon

No self-respecting list could leave out this classic kids’ road trip game! Players take turns selecting an object around them (ideally something in the car or that will remain in sight for a while), and giving the others a clue about it. The traditional formula is “I spy, with my little eye, something [color], or something beginning with [letter].”

But if you want to get preschoolers even more involved with the game, try the I Spy Travel Card Game from University Games. Similar to the board-free classic, this road trip game is seek-and-find style for ages 4 and up. The game contains 48 jumbo cards with simple pictures and corresponding text. Pre-readers will feel grown-up as they “read” about common road trip sights, and then race to be the first to locate them.

5. Travel Blurt

Travel Blurt; Courtesy Amazon

A favorite party game gets a travel makeover in Travel Blurt, a fast-talking word recall game for on-the-go play. Pit sibling against sibling or parent team against kid teams in a hilarious competition that will have everyone laughing out loud. A handy travel case and magnetic scorecards help keep the fun at your fingertips. One of the best road trip games for groups, Travel Blurt is for three to four players, ages 10 and up.

6. License Plate Game

License Plate game; Courtesy Amazon

Have your kids “collect” as many license plate states as they can find, writing each one down to keep track. They probably won’t find all 50 (looking at you, Alaska, and Hawaii), but especially if you’re driving cross-country, you’d be surprised how many people you’re sharing the road with. This is another kids’ road trip game that lends itself equally well to collaboration or competition: do they work together or collect their own lists of plates? Or go a step further and have them learn while playing with the Flip to Win License Plate Game by Melissa & Doug.

Easy to play and fun for all ages, it’s a scavenger-hunt style game that helps kids learn U.S. states and capital cities. The beauty of this smartly designed game—and what makes it one of the best road trip games available—is that the parts stay put. No more fishing loose pieces out of car seats and seat cushions, thanks to sturdy, flippable, magnetic wooden pieces! Adults will enjoy taking a trip down memory lane as they play along with the kids and revisit a childhood classic. Great for gift-giving, this game is for one to two players (or teams), ages 8 and up.

7. Interstate Highway Bingo Cards

Interstate Highway Bingo Cards; Courtesy Amazon

Lure your family members away from their devices and into the driver’s seat on your next road trip travel adventure with Interstate Highway Bingo Cards by Regal Games. Fingertip shutters reveal photos of common road trip sights, such as a horse, rest area, farm house and police car. Be the first to get five pictures in a row, and become the king or queen of the road trip! The four-card set makes it easy for brothers, sisters, aunts, and uncles to get in on the scenery-spotting competition.

8. 20 Questions

Mom looks back at her kids in card during a road trip; Courtesy onkey Business Images/Shutterstock

Especially with younger kids, it often seems like the questions are endless. 20 Questions is a perfect way to get it out of their system. You’ve probably played it before, but just to refresh your memory: one player thinks of a person, place, or thing. The others take turns asking yes-or-no questions; after each question, they get a guess about what/where/who it is. If they don’t solve it after 20 questions, they lose.

9. Guess in 10-Cities Around the World

It’s the Game of 20 Questions, minus 10! In “Guess in 10-Cities Around the World,” players draw clue cards and, through the process of elimination, make guesses to identify one of 52 diverse metropolitan locations. Kids and parents will learn about the food, culture and monuments associated with the world’s most famous cities, from Rome to San Francisco. For parents looking to increase learning mileage on the road, this game for players ages 8 and up is one of the best road trip games to pack in your overnight bag.

10. FlashDash

FlashDash by Winning Fingers helps backseat travelers get the wiggles out, without waging a sibling turf war. A combination of the popular games Simon and Bop it, contained in a compact handheld electronic cube, FlashDash features four different speed and memory games, with lights and optional sound. For kids who need to move on long car rides, this Android device alternative is one of the best new road trip games. Designed for ages 6 to adult.

11. Cow on My Side

Cow in my side; Courtesy Shutterstock

This simple kids’ road trip game is a lot of fun for families driving through the countryside. When you see cows on your side of the road, yell “Cows on my side!” You get a point for each time you call a group of cows. If you spot cows on the opposite side, you can yell “Cows on your side!” and steal a point from your opponent. Passing a cemetery? The first person to yell “Ghost cow!” steals all the other side’s points.

Of course, you can always bring along a tablet or computer and put on one of these kids’ movies for road trips, but sometimes it’s nice to just engage everyone with some old-fashioned fun. Especially if your trip is on the longer side, it’s a good way to turn those potentially torturous hours into quality family bonding time.

The Amazfit Bip U Pro Smartwatch is good for older tweens and teens who are more interested in fitness and activity than taking selfies and playing games. This smartwatch has a battery that lasts for 9 days, GPS and heart rate sensors, as well as notifications for calls, texts, messages, and other mobile apps. It won’t likely appeal to younger kids, but the Amazfit Bip U Pro makes for a great smartwatch for teenagers interested in walking, running, and hiking.
